Folks, we had a blanket distribution drive on 19 Nov, 2016 and we had another one in Dec, 2016.
25 of us volunteers (in 9 cars with 450 blankets) from Bring a Smile have many stories to narrate of our experience as we went about the distribution.
While we combed the city of Hyderabad, we found many homeless people, some sleeping, curled up in a foetal position. Some others had plastic sheets over them. Some lepers jostled with each other trying to snatch blankets from me, in the Old city area of Hyderabad, India.
When you attempt to do for the community, you get a solid reality check. You come away with a real sense of how privileged our lives are in comparison to so many others.
Maybe it’s the sleep deprivation (we were out volunteering till 2 AM on 20 Nov, 2016) or maybe it’s the overwhelming feeling of seeing poverty up close – whatever it is, please send out a ‘Thank you’ into the Universe if you can read this message.
It just means you don’t need a blanket to get through the night.
